Check the evidence for API credits or free access on your actual xAI team before planning an unpaid prototype. This guide distinguishes an offer from a funded balance and explains how to keep the experiment controlled.
What is free at xAI right now
The official billing documentation was checked. No universal ongoing free inference allowance was established by that source. Promotional or account-specific credits require a check in your account. Read the official terms ↗

The official billing guide describes prepaid credits and invoiced billing. Those payment arrangements do not themselves establish a recurring free API entitlement. Check the team’s actual offer and any published eligibility terms. Official documentation.
A promotion should be evaluated on its own conditions. Record which team receives it, which operations are eligible and what ends the offer. If there is no verified allowance in the current source data, treat access as unconfirmed until the console provides evidence.
Use the exact API product in that check. Access to a consumer application or an unrelated account benefit is not sufficient evidence about the developer endpoint used by your code.

Team limits apply per model and include request bursts and token usage. A promotional balance, if offered, does not remove these throughput constraints. Official documentation.
Choose a small, explicit evaluation set and record how many useful tasks it completes. Do not let an experiment expand automatically into tool calls, repeated generations or background processing simply because a balance remains visible.
Tools and media have charge categories beyond ordinary text input and output. Check the full workload before assuming a token-only budget covers every operation. Official documentation.
What ends the free tier
When prepaid funds are depleted, the continuation path depends on the team’s payment configuration. Review automatic top-up and any enabled invoiced allowance before treating a credit balance as a hard stopping point. Official documentation.
For a promotion, use the actual expiry and eligibility conditions rather than a remembered launch offer. Save the offer evidence with the prototype’s budget notes. If those conditions cannot be verified, plan for the application to pause instead of silently moving to paid work.
A key can also lose access because of permission or model availability. Diagnose the actual rejection; do not describe every stopped request as expired credit. The fix should follow the observed account state.
How to build within the free tier
Start with a bounded text task and no optional hosted tools. Save completed results when a page refresh or repeat evaluation would otherwise resend the same input. Make the queued, completed and failed states visible so users do not create duplicate requests while waiting.
Read per-request cost fields where supported. The observed charge gives a firmer basis for extending an experiment than estimating from the final answer’s length alone. Official documentation.
Set an application budget independent of provider defaults. Stop scheduling new work when the experiment reaches its chosen boundary and leave already completed results accessible. Choose an owner who can decide whether additional paid work is justified.
Evaluate quality alongside cost. Keep examples of failed extraction, unsupported claims or incorrect tool arguments so the next model comparison tests the real weaknesses. Free access is useful only if it produces evidence that helps the application decision.
Alternatives if you need more
If a verified free allowance is unavailable, compare Groq Free-plan conditions and Gemini API free-tier conditions for a separate controlled evaluation. Check each provider’s current restrictions and use its own credential and endpoint.
For a paid xAI continuation, review Grok pricing and team billing and key controls. Decide whether the expected value of the task supports its complete cost before removing the prototype’s stop condition.
Use the AI API cost calculator to turn the model and workload you are considering into an estimate.
